Phil Friedman, Seattle Yachts’ Director of Manufacturing, oversees all of the company’s boat building operations, including those of the Marine Manufacturing Group (Tartan, Legacy, and AMP), Northern Marine, Bullfrog Boats, and various SY sub-contracted builds in Asia. He has a long and varied background in the marine industry, as a yacht builder, boat and shipyard manager, small-craft surveyor, and writer/editor.
As the Managing Director of the Port Royal Group, he provided clients with the benefit of his intimate knowledge of yacht construction, major refit and repair, surveying, damage assessment, estimating, contract negotiation, and dispute resolution.
As president and CEO of Palmer Johnson Yachts, Phil was responsible for the executive management of a group of companies with combined annual gross revenues in excess of $100 million and 600 employees across the country. Under Phil’s direction, PJ developed and sold several hundred million dollars in new yacht construction and major refit work, and built and delivered more than a dozen luxury megayachts in the 30- to 60-meter range.
Before that, Phil was VP-Operations and CFO for a multi-location Hatteras and Bertram yacht dealership and chain of boatyards, employing 150 craftsmen in the commissioning, maintenance and refit of luxury yachts. Additionally, over the years, Phil provided a broad range of marine-related technical and business consulting services to a wide variety of clients, Including yacht owners, boatbuilders, marine manufacturers, and aerospace companies.
During several of those years, as the Senior Editor of Power & Motoryacht magazine, Phil tested and evaluated hundreds of yachts worldwide. In total, he has published more than 1,300 articles and several books on yacht design, construction, repair and maintenance. His e-Book, Ten Golden Rules for Successful New Build Projects, has received wide acclaim from industry professionals.

Phil continues actively to consult with yacht builders, buyers, owners, and sellers (www.portroyalgroup.com). His more recent consulting work includes supervision of the construction of some two dozen Tartan and Legacy yachts at MMG in Ohio; a custom Offshore 80 motor yacht in Taiwan; the planning and supervision of shipfitting for a 45-meter high performance composite military patrol vessel; the project planning and management of prototype construction for a new line of 65-foot high performance catamaran motor yachts; and the design, planning and supervision of the fabrication and installation of ultralight interior joinery and furniture in a number of high-performance Hovercraft patrol vessels.
